Expedition Leader Training Program
Do you want to organise and lead major international Scout expeditions?
Learn the skills to organise and lead safe and successful expeditions for young people?
Are you up for the biggest challenge of your life so far?
Through the Expedition Leader Training Program you will learn how to provide safe, high quality international experiences for young people in Scouting. Throughout the two year program you and the team will be challenged, guided and supported to organise a major international expedition. You and the team will undertake your planned expedition incorporating development project work and a demanding adventurous expedition to conduct scientific research or conversation work.
All aspects of the expedition will be planned, organised and undertaken by the members of the leader training program with guidance, support and supervision from experienced expedition leaders. The team will undertake a program of training and preparation alongside organising the expedition to ensure that all members are fully prepared for the expedition and have sound skills in leadership and management that will prepare them for organising future expeditions for young people in Scouting.
The details of an expedition will be decided by the team but previous programs have included undertaking a project in partnership with Malagasy Scouting to develop a Scout facility/camp site and an adventurous expedition and research team traversing the beautiful and remote Masoala peninsular home to the largest area of eastern rainforest and the largest national park in Madagascar.
To apply for the program you must be:
- Aged over 18 at the start of the program
- Able to demonstrate a commitment and drive to organise international Scouting expeditions
- A leader in Scouting
- Actively working through Scout leader training (or hold a wood badge)
It is desirable to have experience of expeditions and travel in developing countries.
This training program will be one of the biggest challenges of your life so far; it will require a significant amount of time and work before, during and after the expedition. The expedition itself will be physically, mentally and emotionally demanding and push you to your limits. This will not be a holiday or organised tour! There is no place for people who are not committed and do not want to work hard.
You will need to commit the equivalent of an evening a week and a weekend every one to two months over the duration of the expedition program. Each expedition member will need to fund their costs for the program and take part in fundraising towards the costs of the development project. It is anticipated that the team will undertake fundraising and seek grant funding towards these costs. An outline budget and program schedule is below.
What will you gain?
The program will provide practical experience of organising and leading a major expedition to a developing country and develop key skills in an expedition context to enable you to organise and lead expeditions in future including:
- Logistics and organisation
- Leadership and management
- Risk management and safety
- Budgeting and accounting
- Development projects
- Working with international partners (Scouting and non-Scouting)
