Mad19 Explorer Scout Participants

Madagascar 2019: The ultimate adventure for Explorer Scouts!

Madagascar 2019 will challenge you: to explore the world, to build international friendships, to contribute to international development and to immerse yourself in a different culture.

We will spend three weeks in Madagascar in the summer of 2019 to undertake a major development project and explore some of the beautiful and unique country.

Download the application form here: Mad19 Participant application form.

Applications close 30th January 2018The project will be building the early stages of a national centre for Scouting in Madagascar; the vision is for a Gilwell of Madagascar! This will help Malagasy Scouting to make more impact across the country with its water and sanitation training programmes and education regarding environmental protection  and will offer more opportunities to young people in Madagascar to benefit from Scouting. We will be working together with Malagasy Scouts throughout the expedition, so providing a unique opportunity to make new friends and learn about a new culture.

Alongside the main project we will also work on smaller projects; working alongside Malagasy Scouts to deliver their water and sanitation program, working with local charity organisations caring for poor and neglected children and contributing to environmental protection.

Madagascar

Madagascar is a unique and beautiful country.

The people are warm and welcoming with a genuine friendliness that is amazing to experience. The culture is an intricate balance, a mixture of many customs and beliefs that might seem strange to westerners with its origins in many cultures from around the world including South East Asia, the Middle East and Africa. The land is a fantastic montage of tropical rainforests, dry plains, craggy mountains and paradise beaches and over 80% of the flora and fauna is found nowhere else on earth, most famously the Lemurs of Madagascar.

Outline Itinerary

The expedition will take place in July and August 2019 for approximately 3 weeks. The exact dates of the expedition will be decided closer to the time. We will spend 2 weeks working on the projects including the smaller projects and then spend about a week exploring a little more of Madagascar, perhaps venturing to the rainforests in search of lemurs and other wildlife.

Outline budget

The cost of the expedition should be no more than £2,800 per person (we will work to reduce the cost where possible), plus fundraising for the project.  As a group we will need to raise £10,000 to fund the project work to be undertaken during the expedition.

This cost includes all travel, accommodation and food for the duration of the expedition, travel insurance, UK preparation camps and some expedition kit and clothing. Other costs to consider which are not included in this budget are travel in the UK to the airport and to preparation camps/activities, vaccinations, Malaria prophylaxis and personal kit.

Requirements

To be able to join the expedition you must be a member of Scouting throughout all of the preparation time and the expedition and aged between 15 and 18 years old on the 1st August 2019.

The expedition is open to everyone who fulfils the requirements above and everyone is encouraged to apply. You do not need specific skills or experience. Scouting or international experience are not important. What is essential is a positive attitude, a desire for adventure and a love of challenges. This expedition is no holiday, it will be demanding and challenging. It will take you out of your comfort zone and put you in places that feel alien. You will need to cope with the unexpected in unfamiliar environments and enjoy the experience of living without the creature comforts that we all take for granted in the UK. This will be full on Madagascar; a huge challenge that offers amazing rewards to those who embrace it.

If you relish adventure and are up to the challenge of a demanding expedition, can cope with a bit of discomfort to really get under the skin of this amazing country, work and live with local people and keep smiling through it all then this expedition is for you! You need a can do attitude, the flexibility to adapt to different situations and a sense of humour that will see you through the difficult moments. If this is you, please apply!

You will need to commit to the full expedition programme running from January 2018 to Autumn 2019 including all the preparation and training weekends and of course the expedition itself in summer 2019. You will also need to commit to fundraising to cover the cost of your participation in the expedition and your contribution to the group fundraising target to fund the project work.

The application form can be downloaded here: Mad19 Participant application form. Please complete the application form and return it by email as soon as possible and no later than the closing date 30th January 2018. Please keep the weekend 9-11th February free for selection.
